How to Play Video Poker

Triple Play Draw Poker from IGT is a game for those of you who like a little more action in real money video poker. Instead of playing just one hand at a time, this version sees you play three hands. The beauty of this online game is the fact that you can enjoy nine different. Video poker occupies a peculiar place in the constellation of casino games. It’s often lumped together with slot machines, both in brick-and-mortar and online settings. However, as aficionados of the game will quickly confirm, it is decidedly not a slot machine. Instead, it affords players some measure of control over their fortunes. Video Poker Online is not only entertaining, it’s also a great tool for training. It is simpler than the popular Texas Hold 'em Poker, because here you focus only on getting the best hand, without having to worry about what your opponents are doing. Play Video Poker Games with the Best Paytables. Depending on your bankroll you may want to search for a lower limit game, or perhaps you’re on the hunt for a machine with a more fruitful RTP percentage. Some of the most popular online video poker games include Jack or Better, Deuces Wild, Bonus Poker, and Double Bonus.

Unlike table Poker and its bluffing, among other characteristics, Video Poker is fairly simple to play. Although there are many different variations with their wild cards and different payout for different hands, the basic setup is the same for most games.

The player is dealt five cards to start. Obviously different wilds mean different strategies, but the player will decide what cards to hold and what cards to discard. Those discarded will be replaced and whatever combination the player ends up with will decide whether he wins or loses. Of course there is skill to this game, unlike video slots, but in no way does it compare to table Poker.

Rules

The rules are pretty much the same as I explained above in “How to Play”. As with any video gambling game, there is no dealer, no other players and most likely very few chances to cheat. The only rule which you hope is enforced is that the machine/game is certified by the proper authorities and you are not getting cleaned out.

Strategy

The best strategy to Video Poker is to win and with that being said, there are a few ways to increase your winnings. A good strategy is not going for the big win while knowing what cards to keep and what cards to throw away. My main recommendation would be to learn a chart which has guidelines to what you should do when dealt certain cards. I will give you a few suggestions to give you some idea as to the Poker strategies.

Always hold on a Royal or Straight Flush, Full House, Straight and a Flush. Take 3 cards on a High Pair (Jacks or better), Low Pair (Tens or lower) and 2 unsuited High Cards. And you only take 5 cards if you have absolutely nothing which has any value.

Terms

As in table Poker, the terms used in Video Poker are for the most part the same.

Flush, Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Wild Royal Flush, Natural Royal Flush, Straight, Four of a Kind, Five of a Kind, Two Pair, Three of a Kind, Jacks or Better and Two Pair

Variations of Video Poker

There are many variations of this game as there are of regular table Poker. Of course with the many variations comes the different payouts. Since casinos are in the business of making money, the more opportunity to win a hand, does not necessarily translate into better odds. Usually the opposite is true.

The most common form is Draw Poker which is also referred to as Jacks or Better.

Deuces’ Wild is also common as the cards with a value of 2 are considered wild.

Double Bonus is also very poplar and features two bonus pays.

Deuces and Joker is unusual in that its plays with a 53 card deck instead of 52. There is also a way to win in this game that beats the payout of a Natural Royal Flush.

Among other variations are, Tens or Better, Jokers Wild, Aces and Eights, Double Double Bonus and many others are including low paying games.

History

As I don’t believe that you can trace Video Poker as far back as Craps or Roulette, there is obviously a history to this game and its popularity. It’s not the word “poker” that seems to be of any significance as much as the word “video”. With the introduction of computers and the video age, it seemed like a natural progression for the cigar smoking poker tables to be replaced or complimented by Video Poker.

The 70’s seem to be the jumping off point for these types of games as technology took off from the Space Age. The 80’s is when the technology became such that casinos introduced these games for the players. Just as Slots have filled the niche for the lone gambler, Video Poker found an audience in those who wanted to play Poker but were a bit intimidated by the live table action.

From the 90s up until the present, Video Poker has founds its place among the other games with the advent of the Internet. With this combination, Video Poker has seen a tremendous amount of growth with the online industry and technology that gives it that extra kick.

While I’m at odds in trying to find anything remarkable about Video Poker in movies and popular culture, for this segment I will focus on just Poker, which should give you some idea as the influence it has.

With too many Poker Movies available I will try to shorten this list to those I likes best which include, The Sting, Casino Royale, Rounder’s, Maverick, Cool Hand Luke and although it’s does not focus on Poker per se, the Poker scene in Goodfellas is pretty intense.

Now for all you movie gurus out there, my favorite of all time is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In the iconic opening scene, the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) is accused of cheating by another player. When the player finds out who he is, his temperament changes quite substantially. Of course Sundance doesn’t let him off that easy and shoots the players gun off his holster, and sends it across the room with a few more shots. And if you’re a fan of classic movies, who can forget the friendly poker game in The Odd Couple.

Poker is not limited to the casino or Internet as there are plenty of Friday night games for those individuals who need to blow off steam from a hard week at work. Although not even the tip of the iceberg, Poker and its distant son Video Poker will be sure to be a part of our lives as they have been in the past.
