Cribbage
Cribbage, or crib, is a card game traditionally for two players, but commonly played with three, four or more, that involves playing and grouping cards in combinations which gain points. Cribbage is a card game originating from the United Kingdom, and it is designed to be played by 2-6 players. The game is, at its core, a strategy-based card game, but it also has a distinct cribbage board that epitomizes the game type. The game has a strict set of rules and a unique scoring system, making it an acquired taste.

How to Play
As in cribbage, a card is cut to add to the crib. This card is placed in thecenter of a 5x5 grid. Starting with the dealer’s opponent, each playerlooks at his top card and either tosses it into the crib (if he hasn’talready done so twice this hand), or plays it on any vacant space in the grid. One player is trying to build the best possible hands in each column, while theother tries to do the same with the rows.
When all cards have been played, each five card hand is scored and the dealeradds the crib to his total. The player with the higher total scores the differencebetween the totals, with the game going to the first player to reach 31.
Cribbage had become a mechanical affair for us, both in choosing which cardsto toss into the crib and which cards to play when. We went through the motions, with a rare play sparking some actual thought. CrossCribb put a whole new spinon things. With pegging removed, you concentrate on building the best hands andstopping your opponent from doing the same.
The balance between offensive and defensive card play is devilish. If my opponenthas already created a row with 4-5-5-6, playing an 8 into it is a no-brainer.But what if I draw a queen? Do I give him 4 points, or do I risk him drawinga 4, 5 or 6? Tough call– especially since I could place the queen in oneof the columns with a 5, scoring points for myself. And if the queen’sthe same suit as one of the fives, it becomes an even tougher choice.
You only need four cards of the same suit for a flush, which adds a frustratingcomponent to defensive play. You want to break up the forming double run, butthe card you just drew would give a flush instead. Play it anyway, or hope youropponent doesn’t draw what he needs and you get a better stopper next time?

Cribbage Scoring
For all three difficulty levels the cards are dealt completely at random to both you and to the computer. The difference between the easy, standard and pro levels is the strategy used to choose the computer's discards and pegging plays. If you are finding that your computer opponent is beating you, you will likely benefit from understanding how the computer chooses its next move.Cribbage Board Template

Discarding: | Chooses the pair of cards that will result in the best hand score ignoring the possible flip card. If the discards are a pair or sum to 15, it adjusts the analyzed hand value by 2 (plus or minus depending on the crib owner.) Notice that this strategy does not account for flushes or possible runs that could result from the flip card. |
Pegging: | Chooses the next card that will result in the highest score for itself. If all plays are of equal value then it chooses at random. |

Discarding: | Evaluates the score for each pair of discards for all possible flip cards still left in the deck. Then takes the play that averages the highest outcome. For the cards in the crib, evaluates their value as well with each possible flip card and adds or subtracts depending on who will count the crib. Note that the potential from the two additional crib cards are not included in the crib analysis. |
Pegging: | Chooses the next card that will result in the highest score for itself. It also prefers not to leave the pegging count at 5 or 21. If all plays are of equal value then it chooses at random. |
